Suncorp stadium 2019: NRL Magic round, major games and other unmissable events

Capri by Fraser’s unbeatable location in the heart of Brisbane CBD puts it right in the midst of the city’s most popular cultural attractions, its best restaurants and bars, the Botanic Gardens and everything in between. But when listing Brisbane’s iconic landmarks, it’s hard to go past Suncorp Stadium as its most influential. The rectangular fortress is the beating heart of the city’s sport and events sector, hosting the beloved Broncos, Reds and Roar along with some of the biggest musical acts in the world.

Getting to Suncorp Stadium from Capri by Fraser

Staying at Capri by Fraser gives you more than five-star accommodation in one of our luxury CBD apartments: it also gives you a quick route to Suncorp Stadium. You have several options for getting there, the first of which is a 30-minute stroll through the bustling heart of Brisbane along Roma and Albert streets. This is a great option for those who are happy to stretch the legs, as it gives you the chance to soak up the city vibes and build excitement as you join the ever-increasing throng of fans en route to the stadium. You can also hop on the 61 or 385 buses from King George Square and hitch a ride to within two minutes walk of the stadium, which will roughly halve your overall travel time. A taxi can be even quicker, but you can expect traffic to be busier than usual ahead of a match or event at the stadium.

During your stay at Capri by Fraser, take every opportunity you can to attend an event at this world-class stadium and experience the exhilarating atmosphere generated by more than 50,000 roaring fans. The stadium has a packed calendar of sport and entertainment in 2019, so here’s the low-down on all the best events to catch at Suncorp this year.

A full weekend of league entertainment for NRL Magic Round

Undoubtedly the biggest upcoming event at Suncorp Stadium is NRL Magic Round, an entire weekend of rugby league action played out in one location. That’s sixteen teams and eight games across four days, running from the 9th to the 12th of May. It will be the first time an entire round is held in one stadium in the history of the NRL, with fans able to nab tickets to every single game of the round for less than $100.

NRL Magic Round won’t just be a sporting spectacle, with plenty of peripheral events and activities held in and around Suncorp Stadium in the lead up to the round, including incredible access to players at signing sessions.

Based on current form, the clash between the Roosters and the Raiders on Sunday is shaping up to be the game of the round, but the red-hot Storm will also be a treat to watch as they take on the Eels on Saturday. All that said and done, you wouldn’t want to miss the home team take on the Sea Eagles on Friday night; even if the Broncos start to the season has been disappointing, the roar of the home crowd will be as loud as ever.

The full schedule for the round is as follows:

    Thursday 9 May:

    • Titans vs. Sharks

    Friday 10 May:

    • Tigers vs. Panthers
    • Sea Eagles vs. Broncos

    Saturday 11 May

    • Bulldogs vs. Knights
    • Warriors vs. Dragons
    • Storm vs. Eels

     Sunday 12 May

    • Roosters vs. Raiders
    • Rabbitohs vs. Cowboys

Numerous ticket options are available to suit your needs, including single and multi-day passes.

    1 day passes:

    • Friday, Saturday or Sunday (May 10, 11 or 12)
    • Tickets from $35

    3 day passes:

    • Friday to Sunday (May 10 -- 12)
    • Tickets from $89

    Golden Charity Night

    • Thursday night (May 9)
    • Tickets from $10
    • All proceeds donated to your choice of NRL charity partner

Witness the greatest sporting rivalry in State of Origin Game 1

Australia will forever be divided by debate between fans of the nations various sporting codes, and few will agree on the subjective topic of which teams -- or athletes -- hold the greatest rivalry in the country. But all that said and done, it’s difficult to go past the annual State of Origin rugby league series between New South Wales and Queensland when considering the fiercest competition in the land. Few fixtures inspire such passion and emotional investment as State of Origin, which sees diehard fans travel from all over the country to witness the NRL’s best of the best clash in an awe-inspiring display of skill, strength and true grit.

The first game in the three-match series of 2019 will be held at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday 5 June at 8pm, giving Queensland the chance to start the series on the front foot with a home win -- or, equally, a chance for NSW to cause an upset and get the chance to win the series in Sydney.

Whether you join the home crowd in rooting for the Maroons, bravely go against the tide and support the Blues or simply go along as a neutral observer, you won’t find a more entertaining or captivating sporting spectacle than State of Origin Game 1.

Cheer on the Wallabies in the Rugby Championship

Brisbane is the heartland of rugby union as much as it is for rugby league, and there’s nothing like seeing a city unite as one to watch the Wallabies take the field in the iconic green and gold jersey. The July 27, 8:00pm fixture against Argentina will be Australia’s second game and first at home in the shortened three-round competition between Australia, Argentina, South Africa and New Zealand. The Wallabies will be looking to improve on a poor showing in the 2018 Championship, which saw the New Zealand All Blacks claim their third consecutive title in a dominant display.

Whether you’re a passionate Wallabies fan or just want to experience a special sporting event, this is a must for anyone staying in Brisbane at the end of July.

Catch the Queensland Reds battle it out in Super Rugby

When the Wallabies aren’t scheduled to play in Brisbane, there’s no need to fret: there’s still plenty of rugby action to catch as Queensland play for a spot in the Super Rugby finals. The season is shaping up to be a tight one for the Reds: since it’s unlikely they’ll finish atop the Australian conference and thus secure a finals spot, they’ll need to finish in the top eight of the overall ladder to advance. Make it your mission to cheer on the Reds as the point end of the season approaches!

    Upcoming matches:

    • Queensland Reds v Sunwolves, Friday 3 May @ 7:30pm
    • Queensland Reds v NSW Waratahs, Saturday 18 May @ 7:30pm
    • Queensland Reds v Jaguares, Saturday 1 June @ 7:30pm
    • Queensland Reds v Auckland Blues, Friday 7 June @ 7:30pm
